Drop Everything and Watch This Movie!

Overall, I do believe that Non-stop is the number one candidate for action movie of the year due to it's esteemed characters, creative use of setting, and intriguing dialogue within the script. Since there has yet to be a perfect movie, Non-stop has it's flaws like all other films. James Mottram, a popular critic from 'Total Film' states, "A nifty lift-off and a tense first hour lead us, disappointingly, to a very bumpy landing. While Neeson and co. do their best, the script just doesn't deliver where it really matters." I do agree that the first hour is highly entertaining. However, the rest of the movie is just as intriguing. The entire film is jam packed with true action which makes it difficult for me to believe that one could become bored after just one hour. The ending to the movie may seem slightly abrupt at first but after thinking about it, the way that Bill Marks and Jen Summers exit the plane is a nice and calm way to wrap up a hectic film. Also, the ending doesn't leave the viewer wondering what happened next, it filled all of the gaps and provided closure. The script is well thought out and has the ability to appeal to all viewers with an open mind. I absolutely recommend this movie to anybody who is looking for a night full of action-packed entertainment.

Passion Behind Words

The third reason why I believe that Non-stop is the number-one action movie of the year is simply due to the characters dialogue. Not only is the script genius, the actors and actresses do a fantastic job interpreting each and every line with grace and passion. Liam Neeson who plays Bill Marks, has several notable lines throughout the movie. One of them being, "Someone on this plane is threatening to kill someone every 20 minutes, unless $150 million is transferred to this account number." This quote is important to the movie because it basically sets the tone of the movie and lets the viewers know what the remainder of the movie will be about. However, this quote is not only great because of it's significance to the plot, but also because of the passion the Marks uses to say it. Another important piece of dialogue is said is from Jen Summers, who is seated next to Marks during the beginning of the plane ride. At the beginning of the movie she states, "I always kinda liked it. Six hours. One seat. Nobody can get to you." In this line, Summers is talking about flying on a plane. It is important because it describes how she feels safe by being on an airplane, making the viewer think that nothing could go wrong. However, things go terribly wrong and Jen Summers view of protection on an airplane is changed. The dialogue stated above is in fact crucial to the movie however, it would not have the same value if the characters did not feel passionate about the words they were saying. Therefore, not only is the script well written, it is carried out in such a way that makes the dialogue that much more significant.

British Aqualantic Flight Ten

Secondly, Non-stop exhibits an exceptional use of their setting even though it may have been difficult. What do I mean by this? Well, considering that ninety-five percent of the movie was filmed on an airplane, the cast and crew were able to execute their limited amount of setting flawlessly. The film starts out with Neeson in his car right outside of the airport, he proceeds to exit his car and enter the JFK airport in New York City. From then on, the filming is restricted and can only take place on the actual flight, British Aqualantic Flight ten. Each individual who was associated with the making of Non-stop did a phenomenal job at making sure that each centimeter of the airplane is utilized effectively. For example, there is even an entire scene just in the plane's restroom due to a body being found there. Also, they were able to keep the suspense high at all times which didn't allow for the audience to get bored of the setting. Personally, I was more focused on who might get killed next than the fact that the scenery was still the same as ten minutes ago. In fact, the scenery not changing boosted the suspense to a new level. I think this because in most action movies, the antagonist can escape to far away lands, making it more difficult to be captured by the protagonist. However, in Non-stop, there is no where to run, and no where to hide. For example, Bill Marks(Neeson) says,
"We're midway across the Atlantic. How do you kill someone in a crowded plane and get away with it?" Which is a perfect depiction of the suspenseful situation that the cast is having to deal with on a single airplane. Therefore, making the simple setting of an airplane truly exceptional.

Perfection in a Cast and Crew

Throughout the film, Non-stop, it is clear to any viewer that the actors and actresses have had their fair share of experience. This is why I firmly believe that due to the perfect meshing of the characters, Non-stop is the best action movie of the year. The lead character, Liam Neeson, is perfect for the part of Bill Marks or the Air Marshal. It becomes completely evident to the viewer that Liam Neeson really puts himself into the shoes of an actual air marshal. The emotion that Neeson puts into his part makes the movie watching experience that much better. While the action is really heating up and all of the flights crew members are anxiously trying to solve the serial mystery, Neeson (Bill Marks) takes action into his own hands. "I'm not hijacking this plane, I am trying to save it." (Neeson)
He does a fantastic job of not only being a hero, but also working well with the other characters. For example, Julianne Moore who plays Jen Summers or the woman who sits next to Marks, is a perfect co-star for Liam Neeson. During an important scene where the first victim is found deceased in the flights restroom, both characters work together efficiently and effectively. Finally, Michelle Dockery plays Nancy the flight attendant. Nancy chooses to stay close to Bill Marks's side through the majority of the movie because he makes her feel safe. Both of these characters are perfectly played to contrast each other. After evaluating the film, it is clear that without each specific assigned niche for each specific actor/actress, the movie itself would not be as successful or entertaining.

Action Movie Of The Year

I have chosen to evaluate the movie Non-stop, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra. I learned about this particular film by commercials on TV and by word of mouth. Both of those forms of advertisement were effective made me want to watch the film. The television commercials were extremely entertaining and left me wanting to drop everything and watch the movie right then. After much anticipation, I was finally able to see Non-stop and it fully met all of my expectations. In fact, as I was walking out of the theater, I was more than ready to see it again. The film is based around the leading character, Liam Neeson, or the Air Marshall. It begins as an average plane ride with average people. However, when the Air Marshall begins to receive threatening text messages from an inside source, things go haywire and it becomes anything but average. With the Air Marshall striving to save lives and protect his plane, nothing goes as expected. Lives are surrendered, both innocent and guilty and the action is infinite. With that being said, I do believe that this action packed film is hands-down the action movie of the year. I firmly believe that Non-stop is the action movie of the year because of the flawless meshing of actors and actresses that were chosen to play leading roles, the exceptional use of setting, and finally, the dialogue used in the movie.
